Mr Tweedy

We found this not-too-tattered paperback collection of “Mr.Tweedy” cartoons at the annual AAUW book sale in Elmhurst, IL last year. The type style on the cover screams “seventies” and, sure enough, the copyright dates for the assembled single panel gags run from 1962 to 1977.

The syndicated cartoon kept Mr. Riddle gainfully employed for 34 years, from 1954 to 1988. It featured the eponymous hero to whom all manner of disappointment, disaster, humiliation and failure were doled out at least six days a week.

Me, I used to read it with pleasure in the evening paper, The Chicago Daily News. You can learn a little bit about the cartoonist, Ned Riddle, by clicking HERE.
